Respiratory System

Oxygen can never be permanently stored in the body, because it is used up by the parts and organs in the human body. My fact is telling me that we use oxygen all over our body. The fact the body is so closed up and that air can never stay inside they body is pretty cool.

Interim Report

Hi Mom and Dad!
This is my interim report for the Human Kinetics Coop.

So far, the highlights for me have been: Having to be part of a really fun and interesting Co-Op


I am the most proud of: That I`m doing all my homework and I`m all caught up in class


The most interesting things I have learned about are: The heart I think I know the heart flow really well.


An example of when I really pushed myself in SuperFit is: The extended beep test i thought i pushed my self really hard because i couldn't breath at all after.


I could make improvements in: Coming to class a bit earlier and not goof off


I am really looking forward to: The this class to do much more and have a lot of fun.


The Basics - WORK HABITS:

Attendance (classes missed and why) -  good because i miss class but not mostly

Participation in field trips (woo kim, grouse grind, rock climbing) - loved all the field trips I have gone on.

Lates (how many & reasons) - couple and because i was goofing off

Preparedness for class (gym strip &/or supplies) -always ready for class.

Class time management (are you using your class time to complete your work?  engaged in class discussion? participating? following along? doing your best? or talking too much? ) - Class time management is really good because i try to finish most stuff in class

Grouse Grind

Panorama Ridge Hike

A) Since i didn't do the grouse grind I'm going to relate these questions to me doing a 7 Km hike to Panorama Ridge last year in my Co-Op. At the top of the mountain my heart rate was high since I did push myself up the steep mountain. My breathing rate was pretty normal,I was red as a cherry.My body temperature was really high because it was really getting cold at the top. My muscles were soaring as soon as i got to the top. Next day my caffs were really soar and made the hike down really intense. My limitations where that the mountain was really steep and it was hard to push through.

 B) Aerobic system and Glycolysis System i know because it was really steady hike but i was really pushing it threw the steep parts making lactic acid.

Observations and Questions -Heart Lab

Observations: Write your observations about the heart’s external antimony – size shape color weight. What are the differences between the shape/size of the atria and ventricles? Describe the aorta and/or pulmonary trunk. Did you find any veins? Describe them.

Answer:  The heart was quit larger then I would think it would be for a pig. The shape was similar to a heart that we all look at if u crop out the two bumps on the top and change them. The colors from the top started off like pink as we looked at the left atrium it was somewhat purple. I would compare the weight to be about 5 lb it was quite large so it had some weight to it. The size and shape between the two sides were similar you couldn't really tell them apart. We did find a veins on the left ventricle I think they were the coronary arteries and veins.

Observations: Write about the thickness of the walls of the ventricles- compare R and L. Valves & Chordae tendinae- What do they look like and feel like? Inside of the atria and ventricles- any observations on size shape color.  Inside of the blood vessels- any observations on size, shape and color.

Answer:  The left ventricle has thicker walls than the right because it needs to pump blood to most of the body when the right only pumps to the lungs. The valves are a like hot pink and they’re a thick piece of meat between the atrium and ventricles. As for the Chordae Tendinae their thin stingy things that are strong and there also had to pull on! The more muscle parts are more of a light pink where more thick parts have the purplish color to it.

Questions:
1.    What was the most surprising thing about dissecting the heart?  Describe what your expectations were and if they were met.
2.    Why are the atria and ventricles so different (compare their structure to their function)?
3.    Why is the left ventricle more muscular than the right?
4.    What are functions of the heart valves?  Describe how the structure of the valves relates to their function (including chordae tendinae).
5.    Use one of your pictures to trace the path of blood through the heart (add arrows?)

 Answers:
1.      As we where cutting the heart it was hard but the muscle was mostly the hard part since it was stretchy. I was surprise with the blood I thought there would be more blood squirting everywhere. But I was satisfied with the lab in general.
2.       I wouldn't think that the top so the atria would be bigger in thickness of walls. When the ventricles on the bottom with the thinner walls. I think that the functions do go well with these structures.
3.      The left ventricle is bigger because it sends blood to the whole body when the right only sends it to the lungs.
4.      The valves help the blood shoot in one way and the chordae tendinae help the hearts to sides so up and down stay apart but together.
